about

"On the Marionette Theater" is based on the essay of the same title by Heinrich Von Kleist. Most of the lyrics of this album (with the exception of those on the tracks "not human" and "puppet play") are directly from the original text (available online here: southerncrossreview.org/9/kleist.htm).

Cosmic Ache seeks to push Kleist's theme (the "divinity" of the puppet) into uncanny territory, juxtaposing the biological with the inanimate, the human with the inhuman, and life with death. Centered around pure tones, distorted ambient soundscapes, computer generated vocals, and a recording of an Indonesian puppet play with gamelans ("Wayang Golek Yogya"--see track credits for sample information), "On the Marionette Theater" is not intended as an easy listen. Here, Cosmic Ache seeks to unsettle, haunt, and goad the listener to a glimpse of the uncanny beneath the façade of the self.
